SHWINCO Offers the ONLY Impact Window for the Dept. of Energy’s R-5 Program!
Dothan, Alabama, June 17, 2010 - Shwinco’s Sales and Marketing Director, Craig Shipp Jr recently participated in the official launch of the Department of Energy’s “Highly-Insulating R-5 Windows and Low-E Storm Windows Volume Purchase Program” in Washington, DC. The event was held at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) headquarters and was attended by 25 manufacturers, industry professionals from such prestigious organizations as the NFRC, AAMA and the Department of Energy. The program was designed to pair manufacturers of such products with potential large-volume purchasers in an effort to help manufacturers overcome the initial costs of producing such products. 50 manufacturers applied for the program and out of those only 25 qualified. Out of those 25, only Shwinco offers qualifying products with both standard and Impact Resistant glass.
“I can’t stress the significance of this enough,” explained Craig Shipp Jr, “we are the only manufacturer that can offer an Impact Window. In coastal communities, these products are required by code and with one qualifying for the R-5 program, they are now much more cost effective. I am very proud that once again, Shwinco is on the technological cutting edge and excited for the possibilities this will bode for the future of our company and the R-5 program!
Terry Mapes of the Energy and Environment Directorate Technology Planning and Deployment, (the organization leading the R-5 program) added, “We would encourage Shwinco to note these distinctive properties on their volume purchase web site so that potential buyers are aware of these. The next phase of the program will be considering adding other windows products and specifications including impact resistance. Our goal is to increase the number of windows products that are appropriate and cost-effective for customers in all regions of the country and that meet current and potential future local and state building codes. We will be engaging industry in the development of those specifications and hope that Shwinco will be a part of that discussion.”
In most coastal states where extreme weather is a factor, Impact Windows and similar products are required on all structures up to five miles from the coastline. In most applications, the addition of impact resistant glass has a negative affect on the energy efficiency of a window. In contrast, the addition of Impact Glass to Shwinco’s products, like the Dominator EXT window, actually increases the energy efficiency. The detriment to these products has always been cost but thanks to the new R-5 Volume Purchase program for Highly Insulating products, they are now within reach.
